In her last will dated 9 December 1965, Mrs. Irma Marthe Brandenberger, who died on 28 July 1986, instituted a foundation under the name |
FOUNDATION DR. J. E. BRANDENBERGER |
Inventor of Cellophane |
Her father, Dr. Jacques Edwin Brandenberger, born on 19 October 1872, had made his name as a chemical scientist by a number of inventions, among these the most outstanding, the viscose film which became known under the name "cellophane". This invention was brought to commercial fruition by him and utilised in his company La Cellophane S.A. in France. |
Mrs. Irma Marthe Brandenberger, influenced by her father's ideals and dedicated to public welfare, bequeathed her entire estate to the foundation after instituting a considerable number of legacies. |
The guiding idea is the institution of an award to honour individuals who have done great service for the welfare of mankind. Irrespective of gender and religious or political persuasion, outstanding achievements in natural sciences and liberal arts, social work, the promotion and preservation of humanitarian culture, and in raising living standards are to be honoured. |
An award commission composed of members of the scientific, social and cultural community has been entrusted with proposing eligible candidates to the Foundation Council. |
After the complete execution of the will, the foundation awards its first Dr. J.E. Brandenberger Award on 6 October 1990. |
This Web site is intended to give the reader an insight into the foundation and the person commemorated and honoured by this award, Dr. Jacques Edwin Brandenberger. |
